Why buy an I1 diamond?

That's a good question. Let's look at how mall jewelers can offer 1 carat (or near) diamonds for under $3000. The mass merchandisers must buy many diamonds at one time. To be able to offer them for this kind of price, there must be a reason. There are so many stones that are badly cut, that we will never even consider. Many of these make it to the malls.

In the photo above, and all these photos, I can see the "feather" type imperfection. That's the reason for the price. It's a pretty cut. It's a pretty color heck, its white as the dickens. It's just it's imperfection that makes this diamond cost as little as it does. The feather is wholly contained inside the diamond, and does not pose any structural threat. Other than this one imperfection, there's nothing else in terms of imperfection-no black spots whatsoever.

If you look at a hundred I1 diamonds, very few will have as inoffensive and imperfection as this one. The problem that a buyer for a mall store faces, is that he has to put a diamond in al 500 stores. That means he can't afford to wait for the one diamond that looks this good. We, on the other hand, buy our diamonds one at a time- each one is important. We wait for the best I1 diamonds.
