When we search for diamonds to offer as pairs, we don't just look for two that are about the same size, call them a match, and move on. That's not our style. It's not what our customers expect or deserve.

We take our time to find two stones which are cut in a way that compliments each other, and have colors which look great sitting next to one another. We're not going to be able to find perfect matches because every diamond is a little different, but we put a lot of care and research into offering the best available.

This pair of trilliant diamonds is a great example of what we look for. There's quite a few trills we pass on.

These feature sides which are ever so slightly bowed- a really nice look that works well with just about any center diamond shape.

 We've graded the diamonds F-G color- but here's an important aspect to color matching....The difference in cuts between the center and sides may mean that even if the diamonds are the same color grade- they may look a little different. This is not really a bad thing if the difference is slight.

That also means that you could conceivably get great results with this pair if your center diamond was anywhere from D to I or even J.

In terms of size of center diamond these diamonds will work with- it's really a case by case basis with two main factors.

1) the characteristics of the center diamond

2) Your desires. Some people want a very full side stone- others want a smaller profile.

I will say that formulas don't work.

There seems to be a lot of trying to use too large a size for sides.

A common misconception is that you need 2carat total weight side diamonds for a two carat center.

The ring below has a 3.76carat center- with .95ct total weight in trills

I know it may seem like we're going against what we just said by offering these stones without GIA reports, but let me explain.

It's a matter of the size, and cost of the diamonds. It has to do with the complexity and costs of submitting diamonds to GIA. If we sent both of these diamonds off for reports we couldn't sell them for the price that we are.

It's important to remember that on major diamond purchases, accept nothing less than GIA.

As a general rule on half carat diamonds below $2000 each, if you are comfortable with the seller, there's nothing wrong with the lack of GIA report.

I'd like to point out that we do not choose to use other less expensive labs.
